What is OpenRouter? OpenRouter is a unified API gateway that gives you access to dozens of AI models — including Claude, GPT-4, Gemini, Llama, and more — through a single account and a single API key.

How does it work with Inkwood? Inkwood sends your writing prompts directly from your browser to OpenRouter using your personal API key. Your key and your writing never touch our servers.

How much does it cost? Many models are completely free to use. Paid models are billed per token (per word, roughly) at very low rates — a full chapter generation typically costs a fraction of a cent. You top up a credit balance and pay only for what you use.

  1. Visit openrouter.ai/signup and create a free account.
  2. Go to openrouter.ai/keys and create a new API key.
  3. Copy the key (it starts with sk-or-v1-) and paste it above.
  4. Optionally, visit openrouter.ai/credits to add credits for paid models.

Canopy Report

What is a Canopy Report? This AI-powered tool analyzes your manuscript from a high-level view (the "canopy"), identifying structural issues, pacing inconsistencies, and character arc gaps.

Caution: Results are AI-generated and should be used as guidance, not absolute truth. They cannot guarantee factual or structural perfection.

Token Warning: Sending a massive novel and full Tome may consume a significant amount of your API credits or tokens. Select only the necessary options and context to minimize costs.

🧭 How Genre Layering Works

Large Language Models rely heavily on established tropes. By separating your novel into three distinct genre layers, you force the AI to build a nuanced, multi-dimensional narrative instead of defaulting to clichés.

  • 1. Primary Genre (World & Setting): This establishes the "physics" and aesthetic of your universe. If you choose Epic Fantasy, the AI knows magic exists, swords are common, and the scale is grand. It forms the foundational atmospheric baseline.
  • 2. Secondary Genre (Plot Structure): This dictates the narrative engine, pacing, and tension. If your primary world is Sci-Fi but your secondary plot is Mystery and Detective, the AI will prioritize clues, suspects, and procedural pacing over standard space battles.
  • 3. Tertiary Genre (Subplots & Tropes): This flavors the character dynamics and B-stories. A Romance tertiary means the AI will weave romantic tension into the background without letting it hijack the main plot.

🎭 The Role of Tone

While your genres build the world and structure the plot, the Tone is the lens through which the AI views that world. It acts as an overarching filter that heavily dictates word choice, the severity of consequences, and the general atmosphere.

Why it helps the AI: AI models naturally default to a neutral, slightly optimistic "helpful" voice. Forcing a specific tone breaks that default bias, ensuring the prose generated actually matches the emotional weight of your intent.

Tips for Selection: Use tone to contrast or complement your genres. A Fantasy / Mystery could be a grim, blood-soaked investigation (Dark & Gritty) or a quirky, magical caper (Whimsical / Lighthearted). Choose the emotional filter that best fits your core story.

Content Restrictions

What does this do?

This tells the AI what content is off-limits or restricted in your story — violence, language, romance, and so on. Write it in standard markdown — headers (#, ##) for categories, *bullets* for individual rules. For example:

# Violence
* No on-page deaths of children.
* Injuries should not be described graphically.

# Language
* No profanity beyond mild swearing.

Comparative Works

Add up to 3 comparative works. Select what specific elements you want to emulate from each (selections must be unique across all your comps).

What do these mean?

Concrete & Direct — target readability grade 3–5. Simple, punchy sentences with extreme rhythm variance, concrete nouns, and physical rather than abstract emotion. Best for lower middle grade readers.

Nuanced & Stylized — target readability grade 6–8. Occasional complex sentences, 1–2 elevated vocabulary words per page, and moderate interiority anchored to the physical world. Best for upper middle grade / lighter YA.

Visceral & Paced — target readability grade 8–10. Sentence length matches narrative tension — short and sharp in action, flowing in transitions. Robust adult vocabulary with scene-relevant interiority. Best for commercial adult / standard YA.

Layered & Complex — unrestricted readability (grade 10+). Highly varied clause structures, musical cadence, sophisticated vocabulary, and deep abstract interiority. Best for literary or unrestricted work.

Narrator Voice Profile

Only needed if the narrator is an established character.

What's New in 1.2.1

Chapter Builder Now Mostly Functional

The Chapter Builder has been overhauled and is now mostly functional. Generate full chapters, build beat-by-beat with Single Beat mode, start scenes in medias res, and switch between Scene Flow and Step by Step modes — your options and settings persist between sessions.

Codebase Overhaul & Bug Fixes

The underlying codebase was restructured for a more modular and reliable architecture. This release also brings a broad set of bug fixes and polish across the app.

From Version 1.2.0
Chapter Versioning

Chapters can now have multiple versions. In the Planning sidebar, expand a chapter to see its version list, use Add Version to start a fresh draft, and click any version to switch. Every version is preserved, so you can explore alternate takes without losing earlier work.

Chapter Builder (Alpha)

Chapter Builder is in alpha development and is only partially working. Some features may not behave as expected. Use at your own risk.
